Past Forward

The dairy industry in the Stillaguamish Valley has been a vital part of the economy here since the 1880s. In 1933 there were 3,000 dairy farmers selling milk in Snohomish County. In 2013 only 25 dairy farms remained in operation, but because of the size of their herds the same volume of milk is still sold from local farmers. Although there are fewer farms today the historic dairy barns that remain along Centennial Trail are a reminder of dairying history in Snohomish County.

Fun Fact:

Valley Gem Farm, the first dairy farm in Snohomish Valley to bottle milk, got its name from a visitor who entered a contest to name the farm—calling it the “gem of the valley.”
